Chapter 15: David Shrigley, Brain Activity

One of the great things about London and living in this fantastic city is the museums and art exhibitions all around. Reading upon a random blog I found an interview with artist David Shrigley, upon more research I decided I really liked his work. It was funny, made you think, unique and entertaining. I then found that he was holding his first ever UK exhibit in the Hayward Museum in Southbank, my favorite area of London.

This was a must see! The line was long, so if there are any thoughts to visit I would advise getting your tickets online first.

One of my favorites, this artwork was just sitting on the floor, almost miss-able. One of the best things about his exhibits is that he completely turns the entire gallery into his blank paper, the gallery becomes an art playground for his mind to be displayed.

One of my fav works

The hidden Typography in this gate definitely impressed this little typography obsessed designer! Beyond the gate was a wonder of childish like paintings that would make you laugh and think. David’s paintings and drawings where my favorite part of the exhibition, constantly making me ponder about his thoughts. His photographs, simply random and hilarious making me crave for more or inspire me to conduct my own.

Just a few of his paintings below, from the funny..

To the thought provoking…

The most entertaining for me was his drawings. I didn’t feel as if I had seen the entire exhibition satisfactorily until I saw the wall of his drawings, hanging on the wall neatly were lots of little drawings, yet not nearly enough, I wanted more!

Standing in a quiet gallery with strangers all around, suddenly someone behind starts to crack up laughing or really dive deep into interpretation, it was indeed an enjoyable exhibition. I wouldn’t want to give away all of his works so I will leave you with some of my favorites but I do advice a visit to this exhibition.

I believe it is his scruffy lines and amateur like art skills along with drawing and captions of the obvious that does the trick. Thoughts that we all think, feelings we all feel, connecting with the audience is said to be an artist greatest asset.

His random photographs I thoroughly enjoyed, with the humorous explanation, seeming to “take the piss” as the English say out of his own photographs. Its art of a different nature, no extreme talent with the pencil or paintbrush but an abstract way to think, a belief in his thoughts and a need to express them.

And a must sneak show is of this piece, the idea behind the artwork alone I loved but the view in the background was great! The OXO tower is in site along with beautiful South Bank, a great place to put the piece and another almost miss-able one, which would of been a shame. I suppose I do the exhibition no justice in my sneaky few pieces, it really is a thought provoking playground of humor to be seen and explored. (just remember to get your tickets online)
